Freight class questions
What is NMFC freight class?
NMFC freight class is a standardized classification (50–500) used to price LTL freight, based primarily on density, along with handling, stowability and liability.
How is freight class determined?
Density is the biggest factor: cubic feet is calculated from dimensions, then weight is divided by cubic feet. The resulting density is matched to a class from the NMFC density scale.
Is this calculator official?
No. This tool gives a density-based estimate for planning. Carriers may classify specific commodities differently under the full NMFC guide.
Why does freight class matter for pricing?
LTL carriers price by class: lower class numbers (denser freight) generally cost less per hundredweight than higher class numbers (lighter, bulkier freight).
